Friday Style Debate: US Open Edition…

We’re coming to the first weekend of the year’s final grand slam and as of writing all of the big names are still in the tournament.  That includes my doppelganger Novak Djokovic (already received two “you look like” comments this week) and everyone’s favorite (including mine) Roger Federer.

Each of them have a very solid grasp of style both on and off court hence it’s a perfect debate topic for this week.  In this case both are bringing their personal take on the classic monochromatic look – who do we feel has the upper hand in this one?  Not sure this debate will have any bearing on whether Federer can finally grab his 18th grand slam or if Djokovic hits double digits with his 10th but we’ll see.

So who does it better – Djokovic on the left or Federer on the right?

Friday Style Debate: does the Great One have great style?

I feel I’m entering dangerous territory with this one as questioning the greatness of the Great One – regardless of subject matter – is never taken lightly in this country!

I walked by the cut-out on the left earlier today at the Calgary airport and while having no opinion on the wine I do have one on the fit of the suit.  Unfortunately it’s a bit sloppy for my tastes and a far cry from the style he exhibited on the ice.  The Gretzky-tuck + the blue blades set him apart from all players past and present.  In this case the sleeves are too long, as is the jacket itself and the pants look like they’re from the baggy days when his career was winding down in New York.

Am I being a bit harsh on this one?  Does the Great One need a bit of a makeover or is he doing just fine as he is?

Let the debate begin…

Friday Style Debate: the merits of the spalla camicia…

Friday Style Debate: the merits of the spalla camicia…

To some the images above represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship when it comes to setting a sleeve into the armhole.  To others it simply looks like a novice who is in the early stages of learning to sew was tasked with setting the sleeves.  The style is known as “spalla camicia” in Italy; it is also referred to as a Neapolitan shoulder or as a waterfall shoulder.  Either way it’s one that elicits a very wide range of responses.

So – what do we think of the spalla camicia?  A technique of absolute beauty or an unnecessary embellishment?

Friday Style Debate: high waisted pants and pleats…

High waist and pleats

Friday Style debate: high waisted pants and pleats…

If you’ve been following the journal over the past few months you’ll have noted my opinion that a more relaxed trim silhouette is emerging as a secondary option to the tighter trim silhouette that has been so prevalent over the last few seasons.  One reason I’m so pleased with this shift is that it provides a wider range of stylistic options – two of which are a higher waisted trouser and those with pleats.

Whether done individually or combined in the same pant the look is most definitely not for everyone – be it due to body type or pure aesthetic opinion.  The reality though is that over the last six months the European sartorial crowd has been slowly pushing the look and the question is whether or not it will hit the mainstream on this side of the Atlantic.

So – what do we say to the emerging trend of higher waisted and pleats?  Yes?  No?  Maybe?

Friday Style Debate: Lack vs Bieksa.

Lack vs Bieksa

Friday Style Debate: Lack vs Bieksa.

For many in Vancouver it was a bit of a sad week as we bid goodbye to two of the most personable Canucks in @eddielack and @kbieksa3 – an unfortunate dose of reality in the business that is professional hockey.

As such I thought it was fitting to say goodbye with an installment on the Friday Style Debate. Based on the images I could (or couldn’t) find it seems that neither player was overly concerned with the tailored aspect of their wardrobe!  If either of you want some assistance in that department I’d be happy to assist the next time the Canes and Ducks roll through town.

With that in mind a debate still needs to occur!  So who who takes the sartorial title between these two?

Let’s debate…

Friday Style Debate: White Trousers?

Friday Style Debate: White Trousers?

For those of you in the menswear know you’ll be aware that the menswear trade show Pitti Uomo just finished up in Florence.  Perhaps the most influential show in classic menswear today it also provides a little sneak peek into the possible direction the game is going.  A big trend this year – white trousers.  We’ve been seeing white cotton and denim for years but this year it was wool and wool linen blends.  Lighter and with much more flow it is a bit of a 1940’s throw-back.

So – what do we think of the white trouser?  Here to stay or just another attempt to create a new trend for the sake of it?

Friday Style Debate: The Question of Beltless Pants…

Friday Style Debate: The Question of Beltless Pants.

In my opinion there is nothing that says “perfectly fitting” quite like a pair of pants without a belt.  Forgoing the loops all together further takes it to the next level as there is simply no going back.  It requires perfection in measuring and cutting as well as consistent exercise to keep the body in a relative steady state.

That said there are many out there who simply feel naked and incomplete without the final touch of the belt.  Which brings us to our question – are beltless pants the peak of perfection or does it leave you feeling something is missing?

Let’s debate…

Friday Style Debate: sockless in the summer?

Time to debate!

sockless with suits

With the warmer weather arriving the questions about summer weddings and daily suit wearing have hit full stride.  No subject in this department is as divisive as the sockless with a suit look.  No doubt the air hitting your ankles and flowing up the pant leg brings comfort – the question is will you actually do it though? Some find it makes perfect sense while others find it way too fashion forward and trendy (despite the fact that the Italians have done it forever).

So where do you fall – will you sport the sockless look with a suit this summer?

Let’s debate…

Friday Style Debate: the ultimate summer fabric…

FSD - mohair vs linen

With the heat finally descending upon us the goal has now shifted to remain as cool as possible. Looser weaved fabrics are the way to go – the looser the weave the more air will pass and cool your body down even on the hottest and stickiest days!

Two great choices – the wool mohair blend on left versus the linen on the right.  Both will keep you cool but the way in which they do it is very much different. The wool mohair will remain crisp and sharp due to the wrinkle-resistant nature of the yarns its made from.  Linen on the other hand will wrinkle and provide a much more casual, live-in appeal that many find charming.  Both are great in my books but as always it comes down to personal preference.

With that in mind – what cloth will you choose for your summer suit this year?

Friday Style Debate: The Merits of The Left and Right Footed Sock…

It’s time to debate!

I must admit that I’m blurring the lines between debate and research on this one – depending on the response I might have to seriously look into sourcing this! The idea of right and left footed socks first came to my attention when my father bought a pair of running socks and raved about them for months.  I then discovered last night that I to had a pair – unknowingly by way of a gift from my mother.  I broke them out for the first time and I must say that they felt pretty fantastic.

Which gets us down to our question – is the left and right footed sock nothing but a sales gimmick or is there actually some common sense in it?
